PRIME Program

The PRIME Program: Treatment for MEN over 40 Years of Age

Sovereign Health proudly offers specialized residential behavioral health treatment for men over 40 years of age through our Personal Recovery Integrating Men’s Experiences (PRIME) Program in beautiful Palm Desert, California. This unique program helps men who are in the prime of their lives establish sober and supportive relationships, manage medical conditions and create new career opportunities.

PRIME restores mental and physical health in men who are struggling with addiction or behavioral health disorders. We use scientific and medical technology to identify and treat any underlying or co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder. The program was designed to give men the power they need to manage their health conditions, repair damaged relationships and establish stable and supportive sober networks.

The PRIME Program professionals are experts from many different specialties who understand how and why men are vulnerable to addiction and mental illness. From neuropsychiatry to nutrition, our treatment teams work with each individual patient to identify problem areas and turn those areas into strengths.  Drawing from a vast knowledge base and experience treating men of all ages and backgrounds, treatment professionals in the PRIME Program have been able to transition men in deep despair back to healthy, confident individuals.

The PRIME Program includes all levels of care from detoxification to outpatient treatment.

PRIME specializes in providing:

  • Safe and Comfortable Detoxification
  • Addiction Treatment
  • Mental Health Care Services
  • Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Program Goals

The primary goal of the PRIME Program is to help men to transition from chemical dependency to a state of lasting recovery. Very often, men have underlying factors that prevent them from being able to maintain sobriety, such as past trauma, negative thought patterns, and unhealthy coping habits. At Sovereign Health, our specialists perform comprehensive assessments that get to the bottom of underlying problems. Treatment is then tailored to meet the needs and goals of each individual man accordingly.

What to Expect

The PRIME Program begins with safe and comfortable medical detoxification for those who are experiencing addiction. Detox is followed by intensive treatment with ongoing 24/7 care. Patients then transition to intensive outpatient care but remain in residence as they reintegrate into life with a sober lifestyle. After discharge, PRIME provides ongoing support and recovery management. The entire program duration varies according to individual needs and goals, usually between 30 and 90 days.

Treatment Teams

From arrival to discharge, men in the PRIME Program and their loved ones are the most important members of our treatment teams. Feedback from patients and their families is used to help team specialists find the ideal combination of treatment methods that work best for each unique individual. Treatment teams continuously assess treatment responses, and adjust goals and the plan accordingly. Specialists comprising our treatment teams include:

  • Medical and psychiatric physicians
  • Nurses
  • Psychologists
  • Primary therapists
  • Specialty therapists
  • Case managers
  • Alcohol and drug counselors
  • Dieticians

We Believe in Science-Based Care

At Sovereign Health, we use many different treatment strategies that are evidence-based. This type of care is supported by strong scientific evidence that the treatment is safe and effective. The evidence-based treatments in the PRIME Program include:

  • Medical therapy (pharmacogenetic testing and targeted therapy)
  • Psychotherapy (individual, group and family)
  • Cognitive remediation
  • Education (understanding mental health conditions, self-care, relapse prevention)
  • Process groups (anger management, coping skills, relapse prevention)
  • Lifestyle development (nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, and recovery meetings)

Levels of Care

PRIME consists of a few different phases, or levels, of care. Men reside in a private, home-like setting, with luxury accommodations. Treatment is provided at a centralized facility; transportation is provided to and from the locale. Progression rates vary, but the treatment process from admission to discharge is as follows:
Upon admission, each new patient will undergo:

  • 24/7 care
  • Safe and comfortable medical detoxification, as needed
  • Symptom management
  • Comprehensive medical and psychological assessment
  • Introduction to the facility and the treatment process
  • Creation of individual treatment goals, and a customized plan
  • Transition into treatment (3 to 21 days)

The next phase of residential treatment involves:

  • 24/7 care
  • Symptom management
  • Full days of customized treatment
  • Weekend visits with family and friends

The intensive outpatient (IOP) phase is like the residential phase, except that patients spends less time in education and process groups. Instead, the focus is on transitioning back to regular life. IOP provides:

  • A supportive environment
  • Ongoing therapy
  • Lifestyle development
  • A recovery community
  • Relapse prevention
  • Transition to outpatient care, e-therapy and the continuing care program

Continuing care helps women to bridge the gap between completing treatment and establishing their own recovery network in their local community. Our continuing care offers:

  • Detailed after-care plans, including medications, appointments, meetings, contact numbers
  • Lifestyle reinforcement
  • Individualized relapse prevention plans
  • Technology-Enhanced Aftercare and Mentoring (TEAM) Program
  • Events and educational opportunities
  • A dedicated website for those who have completed treatment at Sovereign Health

Is PRIME Right for You or Your Loved One?
