Dual Diagnosis Treatment and Levels of Care -

Dual Diagnosis Levels of Care/Who We Treat

Dual Diagnosis treatment is aimed to provide care for individuals who have a substance abuse disorder and a co-occurring mental health disorder. It is important that each of these conditions be diagnosed and treated concurrently. If one is treated without treating the other, a perpetual cycle of relapse can occur resulting in severe disability. There are multiple levels of treatment offered at each facility, depending on how severe the disorder is. Below is a list of the levels of care offered at Sovereign Health locations.

Detox

This is most acute level of care and is offered to patients who are currently addicted to substances and have the risk of enduring withdrawals. Detoxification is an important process in the addiction treatment realm and can be lifesaving, as many substances such as benzodiazepines and alcohol may produce lethal repercussions when an individual is in withdrawal. Many other substances such as prescription painkillers and cocaine have extremely painful withdrawal symptoms and, although not life-threatening, medications may be needed to alleviate the physical withdrawal effects of these substances. Depending on the substance, detox usually takes approximately 24 to 72 hours for the substance to be cleared from the body. In order to treat an underlying mental health disorder, it is important that the individual undergoes detoxification as the initial step when a substance addiction is present. Medically assisted detox is offered at the following Sovereign locations:

  • San Clemente, California
  • Palm Desert, California
  • For Myers, Florida
  • El Paso, Texas

Our Los Angeles facility offers nonmedical detox only. Our San Clemente facility also offers Nutritionally Assisted Detox at an additional cost.

Residential Treatment Center

Commonly referred to as RTC, this is the most intensive of all the long-term treatment programs in addiction and mental health care. Patients live in a staffed residential facility, whether it is a treatment house or a hospital, and receive 24/7 care. Most residential treatment centers now house patients in houses rather than hospitals in order to empower them to function and live in society. Patients can spend 30, 60 or 90 days at these treatment facilities depending on the gravity of their illness and their insurance. Sovereign’s RTC treats substance abuse, mental health and co-occurring disorders. RTC is offered at the following Sovereign locations:

  • San Clemente, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Palm Desert, California
  • Rancho San Diego, California
  • Chandler, Arizona
  • For Myers, Florida
  • El Paso, Texas
  • Delta, Utah (White River Academy)

Partial Hospitalization Program

Commonly referred to as PHP, this is a program in which patients are able to live independently but receive intensive treatment for their substance abuse and co-occurring mental illnesses. Patients are required to undergo an organized therapeutic approach for around four to five hours per day, five days a week. PHP aims to actively diagnose or treat a person’s condition, or to prevent relapse. PHP is offered at all Sovereign locations, which are:

  • San Clemente, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Palm Desert, California
  • Rancho San Diego, California
  • Chandler, Arizona
  • For Myers, Florida
  • Pompano Beach, Florida
  • El Paso, Texas
  • Delta, Utah (White River Academy)

Intensive Outpatient Program

Commonly known as IOP, this program is less intensive than PHP, for individuals who do not require medical supervision. The program can be a step down from partial hospitalization, detoxification, or residential treatment services. IOP can be used to prevent or lessen the need for a more intensive level of treatment and is designed to be more intensive than general outpatient services. Sovereign offers this program at all of its locations.

Evening Intensive Outpatient Program

This is a new program that Sovereign offers that allows individuals who work full time to receive adequate therapy for their substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorder. It includes individual and group therapies, as well as case management. Family involvement is strongly encouraged. The nine-hour program is scheduled over three days each week. Evening IOP is offered at the following Sovereign locations:

  • San Clemente, California
  • For Myers, Florida
  • Pompano Beach, Florida
