Discontinuing the habitual use of drugs and alcohol can be very difficult, especially when the body has become physically dependent on them. The first few hours and days without drugs or alcohol can be extremely uncomfortable and even life-threatening in some cases without treatment and supervision. Sovereign Health of California offers safe and comfortable detoxification services under medical supervision at the following locations:

  • San Clemente: Our flagship facility in this beautiful Orange County location offers both Nutritionally Assisted Detox and medical (pharmacologically assisted) detox.
  • Palm Desert: Our Palm desert location offers medical detox.

Patients requiring medical detox enter our Los Angeles program after undergoing going acute withdrawal at an affiliated nearby medical center. Adolescent patients requiring medical detox enter our Rancho San Diego program after undergoing going acute withdrawal at an affiliated nearby medical center.

Levels of Care

Acute withdrawal: Patients experiencing acute withdrawal from alcohol or drugs (typically the first one to seven days) require 24/7 medical care and monitoring. Such monitoring can be done either at a hospital or specialized residential detox facility. Both settings provide around-the-clock care and monitoring by a detox treatment team that includes physicians, nurses, counselors and other professionals.

  • Hospitalization: Los Angeles and Rancho San Diego locations
  • Residential detox: San Clemente and Palm Desert locations

Post-acute withdrawal: After about a week or so, patients stabilize and begin to feel better. Medications used to prevent and treat withdrawal symptoms are tapered and the patient transitions from the acute withdrawal phase to the post-acute withdrawal phase. For those choosing to stay for treatment after detox, several options exist. These options include the following levels of care:

  • Residential Treatment Center (RTC): Generally, in 30- to 90-day programs patients live in supervised housing and receive full-time treatment and care. RTC is offered at all Sovereign Health of California locations.
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Patients receive about five hours of treatment Monday through Friday but can live independently at home or in sober living housing. PHP is offered at all Sovereign Health of California locations.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Patients attend treatment session for about three hours for three days a week and can live independently. IOP Day is offered at all Sovereign Health of California locations.
  • Evening Intensive Outpatient Program: Patients meet from 6 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings for four to eight weeks at our San Clemente location.
  • Continuing Care: Continuing Care provides support and resources to patients after they complete our programs. This program includes weekly meetings, scheduled events, a monthly e-newsletter and other opportunities to stay connected to the sober community. Continuing care is offered at our San Clemente, Los Angeles and Palm Desert locations.
