Addiction is not a moral failing, a lack of willpower, or a selfish need to feel good all of the time no matter the cost. Those who stay in their addiction do so because they cannot stop drinking or taking drugs. It’s not that they haven’t tried to stop – it’s just when they do they become incredibly sick, extremely anxious and/or overwhelmed by cravings.
Quitting certain substances “cold turkey” can be life-threatening. Abrupt alterations in the chemical processes in the brain can lead to dysregulation of bodily systems. Seizures and extreme abnormalities in heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and respiration can occur. Untreated withdrawal symptoms can progress to heart attack or stroke. Delirium tremens are severe symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, occurring several hours after alcohol consumption is discontinued. Delirium tremens include physical tremors, disorientation, hysteria, fear, hallucinations and convulsions.
