Schizophrenia Treatment

Schizophrenia is a complicated mental disorder that affects about one in 100 Americans. Most cases of schizophrenia are treatable, and with appropriate care most people can manage the condition to lead a relatively normal life.

However, there are misconceptions about schizophrenia, causing people to fear and even shun those with the disorder. This causes further problems for those who have the disorder and many may not seek help for fear of being judged.

What is schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental health disorder that affects the brain’s chemistry, often including hallucinations and delusions. Schizophrenics sometimes hear voices in their heads, believe that others can read their thoughts and experience other delusions. People with schizophrenia may also exhibit paranoid behavior, catatonic states and inappropriate emotional behavior. Schizophrenia is a chronic, lifelong illness that requires constant care and management.

Schizoaffective disorder

Schizoaffective disorder is a mental health disorder characterized by a combination of psychosis (delusions and hallucinations) and an affective mood disorder such as major depression or bipolar disorder. Treatment for schizoaffective disorder combines the treatment for schizophrenia and mood disorders, often including both medication and psychotherapy.
