Eating Disorder Program Testimonial – Sara S.

I am 21 years old. I’ve been with the E.D. Program at Sovereign Health for 60 days. My time here has not been easy. I’ve had to do a lot of hard work; however, I will be forever grateful for having a safe place to heal.

I heard of Sovereign at a very low point in my life. I have severe childhood trauma that I have never dealt with. I was very suicidal and struggled with self-harm and was deeply active in my Eating Disorder. Coming to Sovereign was a very difficult decision to make. I had to decide whether or not I was ready to work through my past and my pain.

The staff in the E.D. Program played a big role in my decision to stay here in treatment and to better myself and my future. The staff was open and welcoming, and I instantly felt genuine love and support from them for myself, as well as for the other patients. Though I was very scared and hesitant, the environment made me feel safe and at ease and that I was NOT alone.

I instantly developed a sense of trust in the relationship with my therapist. We began diving in to my core issues as well as the reason my eating disorder came to fruition. My therapist has given me continued support and is always there for me when I need her, during and after her working hours. Here at the Eating Disorder Program, we all sit together for every meal. This not only gives me the support I need but provides a family-like setting.

I have learned a lot about the importance of nutrition and the exchanges my body needs, and have learned to follow an individualized meal plan. The dietitian is also always readily available anytime I have questions or simply when I ask for or need support.

Each day we do 5-6 groups; these groups focus on feelings and further educate myself and my peers on our disorders. The groups have provided me with a safe place to talk about my emotions and to feel comfortable relating to others who struggle with similar disorders. My favorite group is Equine Therapy. This is a time where we are able to work through our struggles with the guidance and comfort of an animal that seems to read my emotions better than most humans, even without words.

While being here at Sovereign, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to attend EMDR Sessions. These sessions focus on reliving, dealing with, coping with and accepting the severity of my past traumas. I would not say Sovereign Health is perfect, no treatment center is. But I have to say that it has truly and honestly changed my life.

The E.D. program is something I would recommend to someone struggling with an eating disorder. I have been able to find myself here. It has not always been fun or easy. I have been able to work through the pain of my childhood abuse and trauma. The best thing about being in the Eating Disorder Program is that I know that I no longer walk this road alone. The staff involved in the Eating Disorder Program truly care and have a genuine desire to help the clients who are willing to accept it.

Though deciding to take the large step in going to an In-Patient Eating Disorder Program may be an incredibly difficult decision, it is one that I will never regret; and I hope all the patients to come will have a similar experience and outcome in the success of their personal journeys.
