For the past ten years, research has been

conducted revealing areas of the brain in much greater detail than ever before.  Brain mapping is a set of neuroscience techniques which maps biological mass onto dimensional representations of the human or non-human brain, resulting in maps.  Brain mapping provides clinicians with the ability to see the behavior of different brain regions, along them to identify anything abnormal that may be attributed to substance abuse or a mental health disorder.

German and Canadian scientists headed a team of international researchers as part of Europe's Human Brain Project in which they performed a postmortem MRI on the brain of a 65-year-old female, dissecting the brain into multiple super-thin sections which were imaged and created 7,404 images. The result was a three-dimensional brain atlas which has 50 times the resolution of any prior maps and allowing them to view details as tiny as 20 micrometers, about the size of a human cell, to be seen clearly.

Detox drugs such as Methadone and Buprenorphine
have been the most commonly employed forms of treatment for those dealing with opioid addictions. These drugs are partial agonists, meaning they bind to the opioid receptors in the brain but produce less of a psychopharmacological effect than a full agonist such as heroin. If taken in the correct dosage, partial agonists will minimize withdrawal symptoms while not producing a euphoric effect.

Unfortunately, these drugs can prove to be addictive to many patients who may take more than the prescribed amount to feel a partial high from the detox drugs that were intended to help them kick their addiction

The SMART (Self Management Addiction Recovery Training) Handbook is written in simple, straight forward language with tools, exercises, techniques and strategies to help those with drinking and substance-abuse addictive behaviors - including smoking - and behavioral issues, such as compulsive gambling or sexual activity, self-harm, and eating disorders. The Handbook will cover the heart of SMART's 4-Point Program. 1: Building and Maintaining Motivation 2: Coping with Urges 3: Managing Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors 4: Living a Balanced Life SMARTS approach: Teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance. Provides meetings that are educational, supportive and include open discussions.

For those who have struggled with finding success through AA or traditional therapy, SMART Recovery offers a unique, scientific, and rational approach to addiction. The SMART Recovery Handbook can be used in place of or in conjunction with other 12 step programs and/or individual therapy.
Utilizing scientific research, the handbook guides users to look deep inside their patterns and behavior, further becoming aware of their habits and utilizing motivational techniques to make changes.

Ohio Teen Overdoses on Caffeine
Logan J. Stiner, who was a senior at a high school in LaGrange, Ohio, and a state-qualified wrestler, was found dead by his brother in late May, authorities said.

Stiner had consumed at least a teaspoon of powdered caffeine before his death and tests for caffeine level were ordered after police found a bag of what turned out to be powdered caffeine at his home, Lorain County coroner Dr. Steven Evans said.

Evans said Stiner had a lethal level of caffeine in his system, the highest he had ever seen.

The coroner said he does not believe Stiner, a national honor society member who planned to attend Toledo University, had any idea he had consumed a toxic amount of the powder....

Do E-Cigarettes Work? Are They Safe?

First, in my own experience as a doctor- I have found e-cigarettes to be one of the most effective methods of cutting down or quitting smoking for recalcitrant smokers.

This is because e-cigarettes are not only a nicotine replacement therapy, they are a total smoking cessation therapy, as vaping simulates the act of smoking, and you physically draw vapor into your mouth.
