December Brings International Day for Persons with Disabilities

Almost 15 percent of the global population, or more than one billion people, lives with some form of disability. Disability takes many forms, including chronic illness, physical impediments, mental disorders, or sensory deficiency. December 3 is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, a day created by the United Nations to promote understanding and empowerment for those with disabilities. The theme for 2013 is "Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an Inclusive Society and Development for All."

The UN defines disability as having any type of long-term physical, intellectual, mental or sensory impairment that impedes people from being equal members of society. Different countries have different specific laws and definitions regarding disability. A new model of definition concentrates on an individual's need for accommodation or intervention rather than any type of condition or impairment. The access to healthcare, education, and technology also affects the status of disability. For example, someone in need of glasses would not constitute a disabled person in many societies; however, in an impoverished nation, he or she may not have access to corrective lenses and will thereby be disabled.

How to Identifythe Triggers for Holiday Depression to Stay Merry all Season Long

The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy, cheer, and festivities. However, for many people, holidays are often just filled with stress, anxiety, and depression. For some, the holiday blues are an annual occurrence, while other people's struggle with holiday depression might be an anomaly."

Many things can make you depressed over the holidays. In order to remain merry and bright rather than falling victim to depression, it helps to identify the possible triggers of the season.

The Holiday Season

One of the biggest reasons for depression at the holidays is the simple fact that the holidays rarely live up to expectations. Commercials, sappy holiday movies, and selective memories make you believe the holiday season is going to be wonderful. Throughout the year, or at least the weeks leading up to the season, many people plan in order to create the perfect holiday season.

Avoiding Relapse During the Holidays
Holiday Banner 2

The holiday season is filled with family, indulgence, parties, festivities - and stress. This creates the perfect storm for a relapse in recovery from substance abuse. The top reasons for relapsing are stress, negative or challenging emotions, seeing or otherwise sensing the object of addiction, and times of celebration. The holidays are the rare time of year that brings all of them together. Whether you have been in recovery for a few weeks or for years, staying sober during the holidays is tough. However, with these tips on staying sober, you can make it through the holiday season without relapsing.

I received my bachelor's degree at the University of California, Davis, my master's degree in counseling psychology from University of San Francisco, and my Doctorate of Psychology at Azusa Pacific University. I did my pre-doctoral internship with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, working in both male and female maximum security correctional institutions. I had the opportunity to participate in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy training while on internship and look forward to continuing to utilize those skills. I completed my post doctoral work with the Pacific Forensic Psychological Associates Sharper Future, a forensic practice working with state and federally mandated probation and parole offenders. We provided group and individual therapy primarily to sexual offenders and substance abuse patients. Subsequently, I became the Clinical Coordinator with Sharper Future, which provided me the opportunity to gain experience coordinating a treatment team and related clinic issues.

Utilizing Insurance
Cost Effective Treatment

Many sufferers of Addiction, Dual Diagnosis, Mental Health, and/or Eating Disorder conditions have been left untreated due to not having enough financial resources to cover a treatment program.  In the past, there were programs for those who qualified for county and/or government assistance and programs for those who were able to afford high end treatment. The question then arose, what about the middle, typically known as the working class?

Sovereign Health Group wanted to change the face of the utilization of private health insurance for behavioral health and addiction treatment and help more people reach the help they need and deserve.   SHG has been diligent and motivated from inception to create and continue increasing the amount of coverage a patient receives for treatment. From the very first call, our admissions team will handle the verification of benefits and devise a plan of action to get the patient into treatment as quickly as possible. We are willing to work with each person individually and devise the best plan.

We are proud to say "We Accept and Direct Bill Insurance".

We accept most PPO and HMO insurances up front, call Admissions today to learn more, 866-819-2948.
