Men Rehab Center

Since men and women are composed differently, drugs and alcohol will affect each gender in slightly varying ways. With substance abuse and addiction, one may be able to convert more alcohol than the other. This does not mean one gender is better than the other, only that the differences should be explored and brought up during treatment.

A proper rehabilitation center will take this into account during the assessment of an individual. A center like Sovereign Health, will take in all variables such as gender and any co-occurring mental illnesses before developing a treatment plan. At Sovereign Health, we develop a plan to treat the individual and not just the illness.

Through individual therapy a patient will be treated for his or her needs, while group therapy will treat patients of both genders in a supportive setting. While there are some gender-specific differences in dealing with addiction, the addiction itself is ageless and genderless. Do not be afraid to seek treatment today for a better tomorrow.

The 2013 U.S. National Survey on Drug Use and Health finds that for adults aged 12 and older, about 11.5 percent of males have substance abuse or dependency problems, compared to only around 7 percent of females. Although both genders turn to alcohol and drugs for a variety of reasons, there are important biological and psychosocial differences to be cognizant of during treatment.

Underlying conditions

Many people with addiction or substance abuse problems have underlying mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, which make recovery difficult if all present conditions are not treated concurrently. Over the past few years, researchers and regulators have recognized that physiological differences between men and women affect a person’s response to medication and other drugs.

Although underlying conditions of addiction are not gender-specific, there are different patterns and trends for men and women. Some of these reflect the psychosocial pressures based on societal expectations and gender roles. Men are generally expected to be stoic and strong, which can cause them to hold in their emotions. Burying emotions can lead to mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. A man may choose to self-medicate rather than seek treatment, which can result in substance abuse, addiction or mental health problems.

Hormones in the brain are found to affect how men and women respond to substances. Men have low levels of estrogen when compared with women. Estrogen correlates with the release of dopamine in the brain. This means men would have to supplement in order to feel a similar release of dopamine to what women experience.

Treatment at Sovereign Health

For most situations, the treatment of addiction, mental health or behavioral health issues do not necessarily need to be treated in a gender-specific fashion. That being said, Sovereign Health uses holistic treatment programs to focus on each individual instead of the addiction. Sovereign Health is licensed for mental health treatment with an individual mental health program, in addition to separate tracks for addiction and co-occurring disorders.

The residential houses are gender-specific at Sovereign Health and utilize group programming to bring males and females together for treatment. Group therapy and therapeutic activities offer customized treatment that attends to each patient holistically. Additionally, individual therapy puts even more emphasis on treating all underlying conditions and will take into account the possible gender-based variables influencing the addiction.

Instead of treating a patient on gender-specifics, the Sovereign Health Group treats a patient based on their individual needs for recovery. Sovereign Health also assesses for any co-occurring disorders which can undermine treatment and lead to relapse. Following treatment, a patient will be able to receive support from Sovereign Health’s Alumni program.

If a support group or therapy session does separate men and women, it is due to the focus of the meeting. However, most support groups will offer aid to anyone in need for the varying issue. Recovery is a long-term process and will not end after one graduates from a rehabilitation center. Support group allows people struggling to find edification from others in similar situations.
