Recovery is Possible With Right Disorder Treatment

About 30 million Americans have an eating disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder- as notification on the top after the title.

Eating disorders affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds, but young women and adolescent girls are most commonly affected. Eating disorders are characterized by consistently under- or overeating to the point at which physical health and/or psychosocial functioning are compromised. Without treatment, eating disorders tend to get worse over time, but recovery is possible with the right treatment.

Eating disorders are characterized by consistently under- or overeating to the point at which physical health and/or psychosocial functioning are compromised. Without treatment, eating disorders tend to get worse over time, but recovery is possible with the right treatment.

Recovering from an eating disorder is possible. At Sovereign Health of California, our adolescent and adult female patients are provided with the most comprehensive treatment plans so they can recover from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa along with any co-occurring disorders. Through Sovereign Health’s Eating Disorder Program, patients learn healthy behaviors regarding food, effective coping skills, healthy eating behaviors, and positive feelings about their body shape and weight.

But before the treatment, let’s know the types of eating disorders out there

Anorexia Nervosa Treatment

Patients who are diagnosed with anorexia nervosa often have an extremely low body weight, a pathological fear of becoming fat or gaining weight, and a distorted body image, which means that they believe they are overweight when they are underweight.
Two types of anorexia
Anorexia nervosa is divided into two subgroups based on the behaviors that the patient has exhibited over the past three months:

  • Restricting type
  • Binge eating/purging type

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by repeated episodes of binge eating followed by unhealthy behaviors to compensate. Some of the risk factors for bulimia nervosa include:

  • Anxiety and depressive symptoms
  • Negative self-image
  • Personality traits such as perfectionism or having a tendency to please others
  • Lacking coping skills to deal with stress
  • Having a first-degree relative (e.g., parent or sibling) who is diagnosed with an eating disorder, who is overweight or who has another mental health problem
  • Childhood obesity, weight concerns and early pubertal maturation
  • Sexual and/or physical abuse, neglect or other trauma (e.g., being teased for size or weight) during childhood
