The reality show Teen Mom on MTV highlights the growing issue of drug problems for single mothers.

Although the show is absolutely ridiculous, MTV’s Teen Mom illustrates a large and growing problem in our country: young women are having babies when they are not prepared to be mothers and as a result, are turning to alcohol and drugs to cope with the hardship of being a teen mom.

Farrah Abraham, one of the most widely-recognized young mothers on Teen Mom is releasing what she is calling her memoir of the twenty-one years she has been alive. In the book entitled My Teenage Dream Ended, Farrah tells all about her past drug use and her past suicide attempt.

One of her “friends” has come out to say that Farrah is still using drugs and alcohol aggressively. Shocking, huh? Or not. Adderall and Xanax are apparently among the drugs Farrah uses in addition to alcohol.

The cause for concern is that this behavior is not limited to one young, single mother, or even to the cast of this reality show; this is a problem affecting many single mothers.

Drug Problems For Single Mothers

Financial responsibility along with full parental responsibility is falling solely on these young women, who have not matured to a point of even full self-care yet. Now she is responsible for the well being of a helpless child. It is a lot for one person to handle. As the stress mounts, it seems that these girls are seeking a temporary escape through their prescription drug abuse and drug addiction. One night of partying for a friend’s birthday turns into a full weekend of drinking, and possible drug use.

The next few days are brutal because she has added a hangover to an already full plate. Life is hard, and as she feels physically better, she fantasizes about another escape. She had fun. Her child was taken care of in her absence, and she got to do what other people her age are doing. What’s the harm?

The harm is in the spiral from partying to substance abuse, and potential addiction. It can happen very quickly and it can forever alter the life of the mother and child.

The problems addressed on the show Teen Mom do illustrate the reality of many single mothers throughout our society. Listen to this video of how Sovereign helped Mark deal with addiction:
