Mike Tyson to foray into marijuana businessWith the plan of launching a cannabis resort, Mike Tyson, the former heavyweight champion, now joins the list of celebrities like Snoop Dog and Wiz Khalifa who have their own line of pot products. A staunch advocate of therapeutic qualities of cannabis, Tyson along with his business associates and California city Mayor Jennifer Wood, dug ground 60 miles from the remote Death Valley National Park in California December 2017. According to reports, 20 acres of the Tyson Ranch will be dedicated solely for the purposes of growing high quality marijuana, abundant in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Apart from pot cultivation, the resort will also be carrying out cutting-edge research on exploring the medical benefits of marijuana. CBD has many anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant and antipsychotic properties. It is helpful in treating chronic pain in cancer patients as well as symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

California is the latest to join the bandwagon of those states where recreational marijuana is legal. At the stroke of midnight of 2018, one of the most populous states opened the doors of many retail shops to sell weed to public. Estimating the rush, brokers stocked up their wares well in advance. True to their assumptions, the first day of the new year sales broke all records. While the shop owners estimated a 30 percent increase in overnight sales, it was an astronomical 50 to 60 percent.

Marijuana is expected to be one of the major contributors to the economy. In California for example, with the legal hurdles removed, it could well be as mainstay as the other popular cash crop and grapes.

A gateway drug

Unfortunately, despite the hoopla about its use, the fact remains that pot is a gateway drug and exposure to it, especially the strains that are rich in the psychotropic cannabinoid (THC), at a young age has devastating consequences. THC is believed to cause deformities in those areas of the brain that are associated with reward and gratification. As a result, even onetime experience can cause untold miseries and addiction-related woes in future.

Some of the long-term and short-term side effects of pot use are:

  • Cannabis is associated with altered sensory perception. A person under the impact of marijuana, could see brighter colors or distorted images of reality. He or she may also feel disoriented with regards to time and place, and visualize oneself being in a different place away from reality.
  • Not everyone experiences a pleasurable high; many report a bad trip, which can be quite discomforting. It drains the users of their energy and they end up feeling numb.
  • Psychosis is another aftereffect of marijuana use. The condition is characterized by hallucinations, delusions and sometime incoherence in behavior and speech.
  • Cannabis use is also associated with lowered IQ and heightened possibility of schizophrenia at a later stage in life.
