Vicodin® Program

Photo of prescription drug addiction

Vicodin® is a semi-synthetic opioid based prescription drug normally given as a pain reliever or cough suppressant. When taken in high doses, however, its effects equate to those of heroin or morphine. It can be taken orally, in tablet form, or it can be crushed and snorted (like cocaine). In recent years, Vicodin® became the most commonly abused prescription pharmaceutical in the U.S., particularly amongst High-Schoolers.

Addicts will often visit several physicians simultaneously, or practice 'physician hopping' in an attempt to obtain prescriptions. They can also resort to tampering with prescriptions by altering the amount prescribed. This prescription fraud can result in arrest and possible imprisonment.

Treatment

Medically, Vicodin®, is prescribed for moderate pain. The body quickly develops a tolerance to the drug and progressively larger doses are needed to achieve the original effect or high.

Like for many other prescription drugs, we have recently seen an incursion of young Vicodin® addicts coming to us for help.

Withdrawal/Detox:

Specific withdrawal symptoms vary from one patient to another. However, symptoms can appear within a few hours of cessation and can include, but are not limited to, excessive sweating, yawning, runny nose and eyes, bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, shivering, muscle aches and cramps, restlessness, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, loss of appetite and powerful, post-withdrawal cravings.

Detox from these stronger, more lethal opiates tends to be more challenging than with more traditional drugs. Side effects are longer lasting and more severe. At Sovereign Health of California, we utilize a detox method known as NTR, which bathes the brain in a solution of natural amino acids to ease the pain of the detox phase, making it as comfortable as possible.
