Soma®, an American brand name for the chemical Carisoprodol, is a muscle relaxant. It is medically used in conjunction with physiotherapy to treat injuries and musculoskeletal conditions. Carisoprodol works by “telling” the central nervous system to block the sensation of pain. Like many other prescription drugs, an increased tolerance after lengthy medical use can lead to non-medical abuse, and eventually addiction.
Soma® is taken orally, often in combination with alcohol or other drugs to create an intensified high.
Although Soma® is generally safe when taken as prescribed by a doctor and used as directed, its abuse can cause blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, loss of coordination, increased heart rate, depression, chills and/or vomiting. An overdose could lead to breathing difficulties, coma and death.
Withdrawal symptoms can be severe and last for months after cessation. The relapse rate is high and an individualized program is therefore required to support the patient through treatment.
In recent years, we have treated an increasingly large number of Soma® addicts of all ages.
Checking into rehab can be a frightening but life changing experience. At Sovereign Health of California, we have extensive experience in treating all forms of addiction. We have a treatment team of the highest standard of qualification, many of whom have experienced their own journey to sobriety. Our staff is available to provide support and therapy throughout treatment and towards a successful, long-term recovery.
In order for recovery to be successful, it is important to treat both the addiction and any underlying issues. At Sovereign Health of California, our staff specializes in dual diagnosis and the treatment of co-occurring disorders. An initial evaluation will uncover these underlying issues and a treatment plan will be specifically designed to fit the individual’s needs. Our success rate speaks for itself.
