Oxycontin® Addiction Treatment Program

OxyContin® is an opium derivative which acts on the central nervous system. Available on prescription, extended abuse produces a tolerance for the drug and powerful cravings for ever higher doses. Other reported side effect of long term use include constipation fatigue, nausea, headache, dry mouth, stomach cramps, etc. High doses can result in shallow breathing, cold, clammy skin, pupil constriction circulatory collapse, respiratory arrest and death.

OxyContin® is a strong prescription drug intended for pain relief in terminal cancer patients. Used correctly, it has a timed release effect to produce effective relief over a 24 hour period.

OxyContin® is one of the most frequently abused opiate drugs in the U.S. today. Available in tablet form, it can be chewed, crushed and snorted or dissolved in water and injected. Abuse will produce a high similar to that of heroin – but with far worse consequences. Because it is not cut (diluted) with other substances, the addict knows how much of the drug he is getting. This dependable high makes it, together with its ease of availability and relatively low cost, the drug of choice for the majority of addicts. Thus, it is fast outstripping other street drugs in popularity.

Withdrawal from OxyContin® is both difficult and dangerous and should not be undertaken without professional help. Withdrawal symptoms can include, but are not limited to:

  • Perpetual tiredness and lethargy
  • Hot/cold sweats
  • Heart palpitations
  • Joints and muscle pain
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Uncontrollable coughing
  • Diarrhea
  • Insomnia
  • Watery eyes
  • Excessive yawning
  • Depression
  • Coma
  • Death
