Opana (Oxymorphone) Addiction Treatment Program

What is Opana®?

Opana® is essentially a powerful, prescription pain reliever. It comes in tablet form, and has properties similar to morphine and heroin. It is contra-indicated for patients already taking other narcotic pain relief, or medication causing sleepiness or depressed breathing.

Opana® is medically used in pain relief as a preoperative medication and also as an Obstetric Analgesic. When taken recreationally though, it is highly addictive, producing a ‘high’ which some consider more intense than morphine and heroin.

Like other Opioids, long term abuse causes respiratory depression, somnolence, dizziness, nausea, headache and dry mouth. Overdosing can cause stupor, coma, cardiac arrest and death. Other side effects can include impotence, enlargement of the prostate gland and decreased testosterone.

In the past few years, we have noticed a large increase in patients addicted to Opana®. Also worth noting – most were under the age of 25.

Treatment
