What is Depression?

Everybody feels sad at one time or another. It’s not a pleasant feeling, but is perfectly normal. However, if this feeling of sadness persists for long periods of time and affects your everyday life, then there is a problem. This condition is known as clinical depression.

Depression is never a 'normal' part of life; it is a serious illness. It can lead to poor decision-making, alcoholism, isolation even suicide. Depression can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, hormonal changes, medications, drugs, or things that are going on in your life. Without proper treatment, one traumatic event can lead to a severe case of depression that lingers for the rest of a person’s life.

Sometimes, treatment of the depression alone is not enough for a patient to significantly improve their quality of life. If the underlying cause of the depression is not treated, the depression can return again and again. Sovereign Health of California, unlike other depression treatment centers, treats the patient’s depression and co-occurring conditions simultaneously, with cutting edge dual diagnosis therapy, thus creating the best possible chance of a happy life.

How do you Treat Depression?

At Sovereign Health of California, we treat patients in our depression treatment center on a case-by-case basis. Some patients might find that psychotherapy and support groups are the most helpful, while one-to-one talk therapies with psychiatrists work better for others, and still others may prefer a combination of both.

Patients may also be prescribed antidepressant medications. If you are currently on a prescription, you should not stop taking the medication without first consulting your doctor. Some antidepressants have side effects, but they are generally temporary and mild. If side effects are troublesome and persistent, or the drugs are not helping your depression, contact your doctor. Everyone is different, and different prescriptions work for different people.

Depression is among the most treatable of mental illnesses, yet over half of the nearly 20 million adults diagnosed with depression do not seek help Don’t waste another day of your life being depressed! Sovereign Health of California’s qualified staff is here for you.
