Prescription Drug Addiction

Prescription Drug Addiction is a problem that can seriously disrupt your entire life. Here at Sovereign Health, we understand the seriousness of this problem and have created a program of services to help you end your pain.

Our treatment includes such services as pain assessment, pain management and management of continuing symptoms such as anxiety. Many persons currently dependent on prescription medications had or continue to have a legitimate medical reason to take medications. But over time, the line between treating medical symptoms and dependency has become blurred. For example, a person who takes Valium for anxiety may find that over a period of time, the medication becomes less effective and the anxiety in turn increases.

Completing your prescription drug treatment is not difficult, but staying off prescription drugs may be very difficult indeed. Many who need prescription drug detox feel that, since they receive their drugs and info through a doctor, they don’t have the same type of problems as a person who abuses alcohol or other street drugs.

The truth is, abusers of prescription drugs are often quite skilled in convincing physicians that they have genuine ailments that require these drugs. Sometimes these persons may have had these ailments in the past but they continue to feel symptoms as long as they continue to take medication. An example of this is a person who may have had surgery many years ago but still reports feeling pain.

Signs of Prescription Drug Addiction

The signs of needing prescription drug treatment include, but are not limited to being in possession of prescription bottles from more than one doctor or from numerous pharmacies. Other signs include seeking prescriptions from other doctors after their primary physician has refused, pills in plastic bags and mixing medications with other prescription medications or alcohol to increase the effect.

Some of the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States are pain and anti-anxiety medications. These are among the most widely abused prescription drugs. Prescription drug detox from pain medications is done using alternative medications, although this detox is not considered life threatening. Detox from anxiety medications can be life threatening, especially when these medications are used with alcohol.

It is for these reasons that it is important to medically monitor these detox patients in addition to providing the appropriate treatment.
