Heroin Addiction Detox: What to expect

When first entering a drug treatment center for heroin detox, you or your loved one (whichever is the patient) are given a complete physical examination and assessment of the severity of heroin addiction and withdrawal. The patient is then given heroin detox medication to ensure a safe and comfortable heroin detox. Vital functions such as heart rate and blood pressure are monitored regularly in drug rehab and heroin detox patients are given additional assessments as needed.

Sometimes heroin detox patients attempt to complete the heroin detox process on their own, without the medication or medical monitoring they receive in drug rehab. They may do that for several reasons. For example, patients needing heroin detox have a false sense of empowerment, feeling themselves invincible and able overcome any obstacles placed in front of them. In a sense they say to themselves, "I got myself in this mess, now I can get myself out". Although such an attitude is admirable, it is rarely realistic.

These symptoms include - but are not limited to - muscle cramping, back pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle spasms, anxiety, breathlessness, lethargy, sleeplessness and a feeling of weakness. The feelings are generally described as flu-like symptoms, but much stronger. It is at this time that many people find the symptoms of heroin detox too painful and give up.
