Anxiety And The Working Woman

By: Rachael On: 04-30-2013 Category: Behavioral Health, Mental Health

Are you working in a male-dominated profession where competition is high, and you seem to have to work harder than any man just to keep the job you’re in?

The fast-paced nature of the corporate world forces women to keep up in all kinds of new ways.

Take women like Marissa Meyer, the CEO of Yahoo, and the youngest Fortune 500 CEO ever. When she took the job at Yahoo, she was about to give birth to her first child.

How does she seem to have it all so together? How can the rest of us keep up?

Stress over work performance and your ability to keep it all together, while also striving for a healthy social life, and maybe a family of your own, can create impossible demands, and raging anxiety.

Is stress part of your daily life? Are you a woman who is working to “have it all” but the anxiety it is creating is working against the very things you are trying to set up in your life?

Anxiety and the working woman is a real concern.

Balancing work life in a competitive field with a healthy social life is a challenge. How do women cope?

Anxiety, in particular, has lead many working women to cope by using, and later abusing, prescription drugs, mainly in the form of tranquilizers: Xanax, Quaaludes, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, Ambien, Sonata, Nembutal, Mebaral. Ever heard of them?

Popping a pill seems like the easiest way to combat the anxiety that you cannot spend time dealing with. Xanax may take the edge off during the day, but then Ambien is needed just to fall asleep at night.

What do women like Marissa Meyer do differently? Is it all much easier to manage when money is no object? Does a $117 million contract over 5 years make the anxiety more tolerable?

What can the rest of us do to deal with the high demands of a working woman’s life without destroying our bodies?

There has got to be a better way.
